A community-led audit of 290 revitalised Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, has revealed that only 22 have functional ambulances.
The finding was disclosed on Tuesday at a PHC revitalisation Town Hall meeting in Lagos organised by Orodata Science in collaboration with Africa Data Hub.
Presenting the report, Data and Research Lead at Orodata Science, Ms Hannah Naiyeju, said the audit covered six states, Abia, Benue, Cross River, Kano, Osun and Taraba, and assessed facilities funded through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, BHCPF.
Naiyeju said the facilities were benchmarked against the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, Level 2 standards, which require 24/7 services, skilled birth attendants, delivery wards, labs, drugs, power, water and referral systems including ambulances.
She said of the 290 facilities tracked, 153 were completed, 41 ongoing, 70 yet to start, 21 stalled or abandoned and five completed but not in use.
The report noted that NPHCDA data on revitalised PHCs does not match realities in communities, with most centres falling short of minimum functional standards.
