2027: Over 103m Nigerians eligible to vote – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says over 103 million Nigerians are eligible to vote in the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at a strategic workshop for editors organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors in collaboration with the commission.

Amupitan said the figure followed the conclusion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise which captured 10,772,421 new registrants and the final cleanup of the register using the Automated Biometric Identification System, ABIS.

He said the nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, will commence on Friday, October 9, 2026, adding that Phase 1 PVCs have been distributed to all local government centres.

The INEC boss said the commission had completed eight of the 14 major activities in its timetable for the 2027 polls and urged the media to partner with it to combat fake news and build public trust ahead of the elections.
