The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will deliver a peaceful and orderly 2027 general election.
Disu gave the assurance on Saturday in Lagos while speaking with journalists after he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by his alma mater, St. Gregory’s College, through the St. Gregory’s College Old Boys Association.
The event, held at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, also saw the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, receive a similar honour, alongside the launch of the association’s Endowment and Perpetual Fund.
Speaking on preparations for the 2027 polls, the IGP said the Force had learned valuable lessons from the recent Ekiti and Osun governorship elections and would build on the successes recorded.
He said the Ekiti election was widely commended for its peaceful conduct, while the Osun poll, which many feared would be violent, ended without a single death recorded.
Disu added that the police had just concluded a conference where all Commissioners of Police and officers who will participate in election duties were briefed on expectations and professional conduct.
According to him, the training and preparation of personnel are part of efforts to ensure effective discharge of election security duties, with emphasis on neutrality, professionalism and accountability.
The IGP assured Nigerians that the Force would ensure the 2027 elections come and go smoothly without violence.
