The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, says anyone caught rigging election under his administration will be jailed.
Obi said even if it is one vote that is rigged, the person responsible will go to prison.
He stated this on Thursday, September 24, during an interview on ARISE News Prime Time, where he spoke about electoral integrity and his plans for 2027.
“I’ve said it, and I’ll say it again: if I am the serving president of this country, whoever rig elections will be in jail. Even for one vote, you will be in jail,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor also promised that opposition parties will not be harassed if he wins.
He said his government will work with the opposition and involve them in major decisions affecting the country.
“No political party will be harassed; we will support them. We will be working with opposition political parties if there’s a matter of state where we have to take a decision,” he said.
Obi explained that governance should be inclusive, noting that even when he travels out of the country, opposition members will still be part of decision making.
“It’s a country, everyone is involved, and I want to involve everybody. It’s our country. For our children, we must build a stable, united, and secure country,” he added.
He further said he will stay in Nigeria and be accessible to citizens, promising not to go on endless foreign trips or holidays.
“Nobody will look for me and say, ‘Where is Peter?’ I won’t be on holiday; I must be in Nigeria,” Obi said.
