The Federal Road Safety Corps has prohibited its officers from escorting politicians during campaigns for the 2027 general elections.
The directive was given by the Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of RS6, Assistant Corps Marshal Abimbola Owolabi, during her first official visit to the Cross River State Command in Calabar on Wednesday.
Owolabi warned that patrol vehicles, sirens and other official assets must not be deployed for political activities or private events such as weddings and funeral processions.
She said officers assigned to campaign grounds should restrict themselves to traffic control duties to prevent gridlock and reduce the risk of crashes, and must not lead convoys or provide escort services for politicians.
According to her, official vehicles must not be used for any unauthorised purpose, as such acts compromise the neutrality and professionalism of the Corps.
The zonal commander also charged personnel to step up public enlightenment on road safety, noting that sustained education remains key to reducing crashes and achieving zero fatalities.
She further cautioned officers against extortion, corruption and other forms of misconduct, stressing that unprofessional behaviour erodes public trust in the organisation.
“Misconduct by patrol operators and other personnel undermines public confidence in the Corps. Officers must be extremely accountable across operational units,” she said.
Owolabi urged personnel to prioritise their personal safety during enforcement, avoid unnecessary confrontations with motorists, and act with professionalism, especially in volatile situations.
