Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.
The development was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, who said President Bola Tinubu mandated Shettima to represent him at the global gathering.
Shettima will head a high-level delegation that includes Governors Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, ministers and other senior government officials.
The 81st UNGA General Debate is scheduled to hold from September 22 to 28, 2026, with the theme: “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
At the debate, the Vice President will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, highlighting the country’s position on key global issues bordering on national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.
He will also take part in high-level meetings during the UNGA week, including sessions on the Right to Development, climate action and other strategic issues for Nigeria and Africa.
Shettima is also expected to attend the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation and hold bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries, international organisations and development partners on the sidelines of the Assembly.
According to the statement, the engagements will enable Nigeria to advance President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy agenda, deepen strategic partnerships and strengthen its advocacy for reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation.
The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements in New York.
