Thailand has been thrown into mourning after a 14 year old boy killed seven people in a shooting spree at his home and school.
According to police, the teenager first shot his two grandparents at their home in Nonthaburi province on Friday morning, August 7, using his grandfather’s registered handgun.
He then went to his school, Debsirin Nonthaburi School, on the outskirts of Bangkok, where he opened fire on staff and students around 10 a.m.
Five school staff members, including teachers and administrators, were confirmed dead at the school. More than 20 other people were injured, with about nine to ten in critical condition, according to Bangyai Hospital and health officials.
Police said the boy fired at least 26 bullets inside the school and was found with 34 additional rounds. He later died after shooting himself. He was taken to hospital where he was confirmed dead.
The incident is Thailand’s deadliest school shooting in nearly four years and the second school shooting in the country this year.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene and described the incident as terrible. He said police found the suspect had been under stress related to his studies and that the attack appeared to have been planned.
Classmates described the suspect as troubled and said he had been bullied.
“This is terrible for something like this to happen. I’m sad for those who died and sad for something like this to happen in our country,” the Prime Minister said.
