Teaching activities and mid-term examinations were disrupted on Wednesday at the International School, University of Lagos (ISL) as staff staged a protest over their alleged removal from the university’s payroll.
The protesting staff, comprising tutors of the school, gathered at the main gate of ISL chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards to demand restoration of their names to the payroll and payment of outstanding entitlements.
Although the pedestrian gate was left open allowing students to enter the premises, the workers said academic activities including the scheduled mid-term examination did not hold.
Some of the placards displayed read, “Equal Work, Equal Rights; ISL tutors deserve their due; Same university, Same commitment, Same rights.”
The Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), UNILAG chapter, Dr Ademola Yusuf, said the dispute had lingered for years.
Yusuf told newsmen that the affected workers discovered their names had been removed when they attempted to enrol on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and were told they were not on the platform.
According to him, their names were briefly restored after the intervention of the then Pro-Chancellor, Wale Babalakin, but were again removed after salaries were paid in February 2020.
The tutors are also demanding payment of outstanding Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Teaching Allowance (CONTTA) arrears and salary arrears from the 25 and 35 percent adjustments approved in 2024, as well as full implementation of a National Industrial Court judgment affirming their status as university staff.
