Stop Sending Money Home, Obi Tells UK-Based Nigerians

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has asked Nigerians in the United Kingdom to stop sending money to family and friends back home who ask for financial help.

Obi spoke on Sunday at a town hall meeting with his supporters in Manchester, where he linked Nigeria’s current hardship to failed leadership.

According to him, diaspora remittances may give temporary relief to struggling families but they do not fix the bad governance that created the poverty in the first place.

“You have people at home in Nigeria today who are begging you for money. Tell them no!” he told the crowd.

He urged Nigerians abroad to instead use their influence to get their relatives to vote for productive and accountable leaders in the 2027 elections.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, also defended his record in office, insisting his prudent management of public funds set him apart from other governors.

“I’m not saying I’m a saint, but I saved money. I’ve not seen one governor who has saved 10 per cent of what I saved. No governor has done it,” he said.

He added that Nigeria should start its political reset by backing leaders with a lower tolerance for corruption, saying that is how other nations turned around.
