Federal workers will begin to receive a N70,000 monthly transport support from November as part of measures to ease the rising cost of living.
The decision was reached on Tuesday at a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja.
According to the resolutions signed at the end of the meeting, the N70,000 transport intervention will be paid across all grade levels for a period of six months, starting November 2026.
The meeting, which was convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, also approved the payment of peculiar allowance arrears. The allowance, effective from May 1, 2026, will be cleared in three equal instalments beginning in November.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, the Director-General of the Budget Office, Timi Yakubu, and the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare Office, Dr. Garba Abdul, for the government, while NLC President Joe Ajaero signed for labour.
The parties however could not agree on the effective date for the new minimum wage. They agreed instead to immediately constitute a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee to commence discussions.
Other issues covered in the agreement include the settlement of 19 months outstanding allowances for health workers within three months from December 2026, and hazard allowance for agricultural officers.
