Federal Government Clarifies: JSS and SSS Remain, 12-Year Compulsory Education Proposed Within Existing 6-3-3 System.

Federal Ministry of Education

The Federal Government of Nigeria has clarified that Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) have not been scrapped. Instead, the government has proposed a 12-year compulsory education model within the existing 6-3-3 system.
The proposal, presented by the Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, at the Extraordinary National Council on Education Meeting, aims to provide a seamless transition for students between JSS and SSS by eliminating the examination barrier ¹.
The proposed reform is still under consideration, and the Ministry will engage in extensive stakeholder consultations over the next eight months. The final decision will be made at the October 2025 National Council on Education Meeting.
Key aspects of the proposal include:
  • Retaining the 6-3-3 structure: The existing education system will be maintained, with the addition of a 12-year compulsory education component.
  • Eliminating examination barriers: Students will no longer face external assessments between JSS and SSS, ensuring a smoother transition.
  • Extensive stakeholder engagement: The Ministry will consult with education policymakers, state governments, teachers, parents, and other key players to inform the final decision.
The Federal Government reassures the public that it remains committed to enhancing access to quality education and aligning with global best practices.
