The Anambra State Police Command has deployed officers to schools and strategic locations across the state as pupils and students resume for the new session.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement on Wednesday that the deployment is part of the Inspector General of Police’s Safe School Initiative to prevent threats around schools and ensure safe movement during school hours.
He said the operation was coordinated by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Harrison Oruruo.
According to Ikenga, the officers will maintain visible presence around schools, sensitize students on personal safety, assist them in crossing roads and respond to security concerns.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen collaboration between the police, school authorities, parents, teachers, host communities and other stakeholders.
Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Oji Ama, urged parents, teachers and students to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities around schools.
“The protection of children and other members of the school community remains a priority for the command. We urge school authorities, parents, guardians and students to remain security conscious and promptly report any suspicious persons, activities or security concerns to the police,” Ama said.
He described security as a shared responsibility and called on stakeholders to maintain effective communication with the police and other security agencies.
Ama assured residents that the command will sustain visibility, community engagement and proactive policing around educational institutions.
He wished pupils, students and teachers a safe and successful academic session.
