Ogun State Government Celebrates Milestone as College of Nursing Sciences Matriculate First Students.

The Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences has achieved a significant milestone with the matriculation of 360 pioneer National Diploma (ND) students for its 2024/2025 Academic Session marking a new era for the institution, which has transitioned from a school of nursing to a full-fledged college.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, announced this during the matriculation ceremony at the Telemedicine Hall, Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta. She highlighted the present administration’s commitment to standardizing nursing education in the State, which accelerated the institution’s collegiate status.

Dr. Coker emphasized the crucial role these students will play in addressing the nation’s healthcare challenges, particularly with the shortage of healthcare professionals caused by brain drain. She urged them to approach their training with discipline, compassion, and a sense of purpose.

Despite the global demand for skilled and empathetic nurses, Dr. Coker encouraged the new students to remain committed to transforming healthcare in Ogun State and Nigeria. Urging them to contribute to creating opportunities in the country rather than seeking them abroad.

The Commissioner noted that the selection process was based on merit, replacing the era of “who you know” with “what you know.” This ensures that only qualified students represent the institution and the State globally.

Dr. Coker appreciated Governor Dapo Abiodun’s support in securing accreditation for the college’s upgrade. She also commended the faculty and staff for their dedication to nurturing future healthcare professionals.

Dr. Jemila Sodimu, the Provost

The Provost, Dr. Jemilat Sodimu, emphasized the competitive admission process, which saw 360 students selected from over 4,000 applicants nationwide.

She urged the students to take pride in their new roles as future healthcare leaders dedicated to compassionate service.

Dr. Sodimu reminded the students of the College’s zero-tolerance policy for truancy, cultism, and other vices, and encouraged them to maintain high standards of character and learning, with hard work as their watchword.

The State Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Mrs. Adejoke Bello, encouraged the students to cultivate compassion and empathy. She noted that these virtues are essential, as patients look to nurses for emotional support and medical care.

Some of the matriculants expressed their excitement about gaining admission and pledged to demonstrate commitment and diligence throughout their training.
