President of the Nigerian Institute of Building , Bldr. Sir Alderton Ewa Ewa FNIOB , has issued a compelling call to action, urging builders, policymakers, developers, homeowners, and the general public to prioritize engagement with professional builders as a crucial step in preventing building collapses and promoting sustainable housing.
The call to action was made during the Nigerian Builders’ Day held at the Nigerian Institute of Building at Quarry Road, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday. In his address, presented by the Institute’s Vice Chairman, Bldr. Adedayo Ogunsola FNIOB, President Ewa Ewa FNIOB emphasized the pivotal role builders play in driving the transition towards sustainable housing delivery.
“Builders are instrumental in driving the transition towards sustainable housing delivery by integrating environmentally friendly practices, materials, and technologies into the construction process, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable built environment for present and future generations,” stated President Ewa Ewa.
The theme for this year’s Builders’ Day, “The Role of Builders in Sustainable Housing Delivery,” underscored the importance of collaboration and adherence to ethical practices within the industry. The president urged stakeholders to embrace specialization, uphold standards, champion quality, combat quackery, and embrace innovation to ensure sustainable construction practices.
During the press conference session, the Vice President of the Nigerian Institute of Building emphasized the roles of builders in professionally managing the building process, construction, and maintenance. He highlighted the dangers of engaging unqualified individuals, commonly referred to as “quacks,” and urged intending house owners to consult and engage registered builders to prevent building collapses.
“Quacks, not builders, are responsible for collapsed buildings”, stated, the vice-chairman as he throws his weight behind builders, saying only builders are professionally trained and qualified to manage and sustain a building project.
Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Building, Bldr. Adebayo Adesina, also spoke at the event, encouraging professional builders to adhere to the tenets of the profession to prevent future occurrences of building collapse.
In the face of challenges posed by forex fluctuations, the president emphasized that addressing these challenges and capitalizing on opportunities would make the Nigeria construction industry more resilient, sustainable, and less susceptible to external market volatility.
The call to action resonated strongly with attendees, signaling a united commitment to building a future where safety, quality, and sustainability are at the forefront of the construction industry.
