The risks of artificial intelligence falling into the wrong hands must be addressed before it is too late, Britain’s King Charles told top executives from the world’s biggest AI firms on Thursday, September 17, 2026 at a meeting in London.
Addressing leaders from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic and others, the King said even the creators of the technology are now warning it could develop darker capabilities.
“Those who have created these technologies are now increasingly warning that AI risks developing darker capacities – perhaps even to take life,” he said.
He warned of existential dangers if the systems are misused.
“In this regard, if I may say so, there seems urgency in adequately considering the existential dangers of such technologies falling into the wrong hands, and being used in potentially catastrophic ways,” Charles said.
The King urged the industry to ensure sufficient safeguards are put in place.
“The task before you is not merely to advance technology, but to ensure that it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world,” he added.
