Harry Kane is on the verge of equalling Peter Shilton’s long standing record as England’s most-capped player.
The England skipper currently has 121 caps, four fewer than Shilton’s 125, and could match the former goalkeeper’s tally during the upcoming Nations League window.
England face Spain, Croatia and a double header against the Czech Republic over the next two weeks, giving Kane the perfect opportunity to level up before looking to break the record in November.
Speaking ahead of the fixtures, Kane said reaching the milestone would be special, having grown up dreaming simply of playing for England.
He said the journey so far has been incredible, with the team reaching finals and pushing England to heights not seen in a very long time, and being four caps away from the all time record is surreal.
The striker is one of only 10 players to have made 100 appearances for England and is already the country’s all time leading scorer with 85 goals.
Kane also wondered why no England great has gone beyond 125 caps when players from other nations have far higher numbers. He pointed to Cristiano Ronaldo’s world-record 233 caps for Portugal, plus Lionel Messi and Luka Modric both passing 200, while former Spurs teammates Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Ivan Perisic have all played over 150 internationals.
According to him, it raises questions about culture, mentality or external pressure in English football.
The only thing missing from his decorated England career remains a major tournament trophy.
