Fuel Tanker Crushes Five To Death In Oyo

Five people have been confirmed dead after a diesel tanker suffered brake failure and crushed commercial vehicles in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident occurred on Saturday around Aduloju Bus Stop, opposite Dominion City, along the Ojoo-Iwo Road Expressway in Akinyele Local Government Area.

According to eyewitnesses and officials, the tanker which was loaded with 45,000 litres of diesel lost its brake while in motion and rammed into vehicles trapped in traffic.

About six vehicles were involved, including an unregistered car and four commercial Micra cars.

The tanker reportedly somersaulted and landed on one of the Micra cars, killing all five occupants on the spot — two males including the driver and three females.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority, OYRTMA, Adeoye Ayoade, confirmed the incident. He said the traffic build-up was caused by a trailer carrying motor spare parts that broke down around Arilogu as early as 5 am.

The Oyo State Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kehinde Dahunsi, also confirmed that the crash was due to brake failure. He said nine passengers were involved and four were rescued.

Officials of the Fire Service, FRSC, OYRTMA and the police were deployed to the scene to prevent fire outbreak and clear the wreckage.
