Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, says no Nigerian should be punished for demanding good governance.
Obi said this on Tuesday in a statement marking the sixth anniversary of the October 20, 2020 Lekki Toll Gate shootings.
In the statement posted on his X handle, Obi described the anniversary as a painful reminder of the price Nigerian youths paid in their demand for a better country.
He recalled that on that night, peaceful #EndSARS protesters were met with gunfire, lives were lost and many were injured, leaving the nation with questions about justice, accountability and the sanctity of human life.
“We must never forget. We must never normalise injustice,” Obi said.
The former Anambra governor reaffirmed his belief in a New Nigeria, saying it must be a country where citizens are protected, not brutalised, where young people are heard, not silenced, and where government power is exercised with responsibility and respect for human rights.
“Nigeria must become a nation where no citizen is punished for demanding good governance and a better future,” he stated.
He prayed for the departed to rest in peace and said their sacrifice should strengthen the resolve to ensure the tragedy is never repeated.
