Police fired teargas at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on Tuesday to disperse people gathered for the 6th anniversary #EndSARS memorial.
The crowd including activists, journalists, residents and political figures had gathered for a wreath-laying ceremony organised by the Enough is Enough movement to honour victims of the October 2020 protests.
Among those affected by the teargas were governorship candidates Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Funso Doherty of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to reports, officers arrived at the tollgate before the memorial could begin and fired teargas canisters, forcing participants to scamper for safety before the wreaths could be laid.
Organisers said they brought 15 wreaths for the nine persons listed as dead by the Lagos Judicial Panel, four listed as missing and presumed dead, journalist Pelumi Onifade, and other unidentified victims.
Some persons were injured as people scrambled to safety, with traffic building up on the expressway as the fumes spread. The Lagos State Police Command is yet to issue a statement on the dispersal.
