The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection with the killing of two men during a violent clash in Dass Local Government Area of the state.
The West Afrikan Post learnt on Saturday that the incident occurred on Friday following the alleged stabbing of a 29-year-old tricycle rider, Abdulrahman Nuru, in the Tudun Wus area of Dass.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, preliminary investigation revealed that Ibrahim El-Safwan, aka Jabala’i, of Bayan Fada area, Dass, allegedly conspired with his accomplices and attacked Nuru with cutlasses.
Habib said, “At about 1800hrs, one Ibrahim El-Safwan ‘m’, aka Jabala’i, of Bayan Fada area, Dass, criminally conspired with his accomplices, intercepted and brutally attacked one Abdulrahman Nuru ‘m’, 29-years-old, a tricycle rider of Bundot area, Dass, stabbing him with cutlasses on various parts of his body at Tudun Wus area, Dass.”
He said policemen attached to the Dass Division were mobilised to the scene after receiving the report, adding that personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, whose headquarters is close to the scene, had already taken custody of the tricycle and one suspect.
The victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Dass, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
The police said the killing subsequently triggered tension in the area, with youths from Bundot mobilising in large numbers and storming Bayan Fada armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons in an alleged reprisal attack.
The development led to a violent confrontation between the two groups at an open space near the Dass Central Motor Park.
During the clash, another man, 38-year-old Mukhtar Jibrin of Bayan Fada, was stabbed.
Jibrin was rushed to the General Hospital, Dass, before being referred to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where he was also confirmed dead.
The command said its detectives responded swiftly to the situation, adding that they “swung into action, doused the tension and restored normalcy” in the area.
Seven suspects were subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.
They are Umar Abubakar, 20, of Bayan Fada, identified as the principal suspect; Blus Garba, 19; Adamu Muhammad, 17; Hussaini Danjuma, 17; Hassan Danjuma, 17; Shuaibu Sani, 17; and Aliyu Abdullahi, 18, all of Bundot.
The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspects who were still at large.
Condemning the killings, the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, ordered a “discreet and thorough investigation” into the incident.
The CP also appealed to residents of Dass to remain calm and law-abiding and desist from taking the law into their own hands.
He assured the residents that “justice will be served.”
