Mexico has finally accepted Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador, ending eight months of waiting.
Omokri announced it himself on Tuesday on X. He said the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the agrément to the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.
The agrément is the official approval a host country must give before an ambassador can resume.
With the approval, Omokri will serve as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
President Bola Tinubu had nominated Omokri in November 2025 alongside 68 others, including Femi Fani-Kayode and former INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu. The Senate confirmed them in December 2025, and Tinubu approved posting of 65 ambassadors-designate in March 2026 with Omokri posted to Mexico City.
His posting had remained pending while Mexico and Japan were yet to give consent. In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was engaging both countries to secure the approvals.
