Lagos Hospital Workers Save Newborn Baby From Abduction

An alleged attempt to abduct a newborn baby was stopped at a private hospital in Lagos, after staff and patients raised alarm and held a female suspect. The incident happened on Saturday at P and G Hospital, located in Abule-Egba area of Lagos State.

According to reports, the plan involved two women. The main suspect was said to have faked pregnancy by hiding pieces of cloth under her dress, while her alleged accomplice claimed she came to assist her during delivery.

Their movement became suspicious to people inside the hospital. Workers and some patients quickly intervened and prevented the baby from being taken away.

Several videos from the scene have since gone viral. In one of the clips, the pieces of cloth fell to the floor as the woman was forced to sit and questioned. The footage also showed a man in traditional wear hitting the suspect while others confronted her. Another video captured the moment she was dragged and forced into a car.

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest. Speaking on Sunday in response to enquiries from PUNCH Metro, the Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the suspect is still in detention.

She disclosed that a manhunt has been launched for the second suspect who escaped.

“The alleged perpetrator is currently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the accomplice and charge the case to court as soon as the investigation is concluded,” Adebisi stated.

Police added that the suspect will be arraigned in court once investigation is completed.

The case is similar to a previous incident in the state. In June 2023, a 49-year-old woman, Modinat Faniyi, was brought before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to steal a newborn at Ahmadiya Muslim Hospital, Ijaiye-Ojokoro, while the baby’s mother was asleep.
