A 55 year old driver escaped unhurt after a moving train hit his car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos on Friday.
The incident, which involved a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT and a train heading towards Agege, left the vehicle badly damaged but no casualty was recorded.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, confirmed this in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to Taofiq, the impact was severe and the car was almost a complete write-off.
“Notwithstanding the severity of the impact and the considerable destruction sustained by the vehicle, the motorist miraculously escaped without any reported injury, with no casualty recorded at the scene,” the statement said.
He said onlookers had initially pushed the wreckage off the tracks during an early morning traffic update at 7:20 a.m., while LASTMA operatives and security personnel later rescued the driver and cleared the rail line, allowing the train to continue its journey to Agege.
Despite the clearance, vehicular movement around the PWD axis remained severely impeded for hours.
The wrecked Honda has been handed over to security personnel for investigation.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended his men for the prompt response and urged motorists to exercise caution at railway crossings, warning that disregard for safety rules could have devastating consequences.
