Tragedy struck in Akure on Friday morning after a Vehicle Inspection Officer, VIO, was crushed to death by a truck driver during a routine check.
The deceased, 35 year old Adediji Sesan, was on duty along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, at about 9:30 a.m., when the incident occurred.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the death in a statement by its spokesperson, DSP Jimoh Abayomi.
According to the police, Sesan and his team had flagged down a white Mitsubishi van with registration number AGL 992 XX for inspection of its particulars.
The driver, identified as 37 year old Ayoade Idowu of Gbogi Street, Akure, was said to have initially complied but allegedly zoomed off when asked to produce his documents, hitting the officer in the process.
Sesan sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead. His remains have been deposited in the morgue for autopsy.
Abayomi said the driver has been arrested and detained, while operatives have visited the scene.
He added that the case will be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation, assuring that thorough investigation and appropriate legal action will follow.
