Two Gombe men sentenced to die by hanging over armed robbery

A Gombe State High Court sitting in Court No. 5 has sentenced two men, Buhari Sule and Muktari Ali Hilami, to death by hanging for armed robbery and murder.

Justice Muhammad-Auwal Haruna delivered the judgment on Wednesday and found the defendants guilty of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.

The court heard that the offence was committed on September 18, 2025, at Garin Galadima village, near Pindiga in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.

According to the prosecution, the two men conspired and armed themselves with dangerous weapons including sticks and hoes. They attacked a 35 year old man, Murtala Rabi’u, robbed him of an Itel keypad phone and N7,400 cash, inflicted severe injuries that led to his death and dumped his body in a maize farm.

Presenting the case, state counsel Abdulkadir Ibrahim told the court the offences contravened Sections 97, 297 and 221 of the Penal Code Law.

“The defendants agreed among themselves at Garin Galadima village, armed themselves with dangerous weapons and attacked the deceased, Murtala Rabi’u,” the prosecutor said.

He added that they robbed the deceased of his Itel keypad phone without a SIM card and “the sum of N7,400 cash, which they shared among themselves after dumping his corpse in a maize farm.”

The charges were read and explained to the defendants, but they pleaded not guilty. During trial, the prosecution called two witnesses who were cross examined by defence counsel Dan Mamman. The defence called one witness.

In his judgment, Justice Haruna said he carefully examined the evidence and held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, particularly through the first prosecution witness, while the defendants failed to establish a credible defence.
