South Africa’s deputy national police commissioner has resigned three weeks after he was arrested and charged with sexual offences.
Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya, 59, tendered his resignation on Monday, October 12, 2026, through his lawyer at the start of a disciplinary hearing, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed.
SAPS said his departure will be recorded as a dishonourable discharge because he resigned while facing an active disciplinary case. He had been suspended since September 2025.
Sibiya is currently in custody at Randburg after his arrest last month. He faces charges including rape, human trafficking and the sexual grooming of a minor. Prosecutors allege he groomed a 16 year old girl and raped an 18 year old woman.
He denies the charges. He acknowledges having sex with the 18-year-old but says it was consensual.
His bail application has been postponed to October 13.
The resignation comes as Sibiya is also under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission, the judicial inquiry set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa in September 2025 to investigate allegations of corruption and collusion between police officers and organised crime.
At the commission, Sibiya has been accused of interfering with investigations into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal and of receiving cash and 20 impalas from an alleged criminal kingpin in exchange for a police contract. He denied the allegations during his testimony
