South Africa and Qatar are among seven countries currently in talks to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. The International Olympic Committee, IOC, confirmed the list on Tuesday, October 6.
According to the IOC, the seven interested parties in continuous dialogue are Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Turkiye.
The IOC said other National Olympic Committees have until October 31 to declare interest for the 2036 edition.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry said the next hosts will be judged on funding plans, political and public support, and athlete experience.
“Wherever the Games take place, one thing must never change: athletes have to be at the heart of everything we do,” Coventry said.
India is bidding with Ahmedabad as its proposed host city. The city will also host the 2030 Commonwealth Games as a test run. South Africa is pushing to become the first African country to stage the Olympics, having previously hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 1995 Rugby World Cup.
Qatar, which hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is proposing Doha. A Games in Qatar would likely be moved outside the traditional July-August window due to extreme heat.
Germany has put forward Munich, a century after the 1936 Berlin Games. Turkey is proposing Istanbul, while South Korea has Seoul, which hosted the 1988 Olympics, and Hungary is bidding with Budapest.
The IOC Executive Board will shortlist candidates in March 2027 before moving into targeted dialogue. The shortlisted nations will present their projects to the Future Host Commission in November.
