Russia has launched its largest overnight attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since spring, primarily targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region, Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi has said.
At least six people were killed and more than 30 injured across the country in the strikes overnight from September 29 to 30, including a child in the Kyiv region. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said three people died, including a utility worker.
In a statement on Telegram, Koretskyi said: “Since the summer, there has effectively not been a single day without enemy attacks on our energy infrastructure. However, a mass and combined attack of this scale has occurred for the first time since the end of the last heating season.”
Ukraine’s biggest private energy company, DTEK, said power to 8,000 homes had been restored after what it described as a difficult night for the capital. The Russian defence ministry said one of its targets was the Trypilska power station, the largest supplier of electricity to Kyiv.
Eleven regions were hit overnight, officials said, with damage also to homes, social infrastructure, civilian businesses and railways.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said critical infrastructure was struck in Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad and Rivne regions. On Wednesday morning, some households in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions remained without power, the energy ministry said.
