Nollywood film, ‘Her Daughters’ Mother’, selected for Film Africa 2026

Nollywood drama “Her Daughters’ Mother” has been selected to screen at Film Africa 2026 in London.

The film, the feature directorial debut of Chinazaekpere Chukwu, is scheduled to show on October 28 at the newly launched EbonyLife Place London. The festival runs from October 23 to November 1.

Written and directed by Chukwu, the 110-minute drama is set in Benin City, Edo State, and is filmed in English, Pidgin, Urhobo and Bini. It stars Ejovwoke Obas Olikuntuyi as Ejiro, alongside Osas Okonyon, Philip Asaya, Najite Dede and Adeoluwa Akintoba.

The story follows 33-year-old Ejiro, who was married off at 16 and returns home in her thirties as a widowed mother of two daughters. Seeking a more secure future, she enters a second marriage with Osato, who promises to educate her children but demands a male heir. When she fails to give him a son, the marriage becomes unbearable.

It also follows her eldest daughter Ejaita, a teenager who dreams of becoming a doctor while navigating her mother’s protectiveness.

Chukwu said the film is intended as a juxtaposition of Buchi Emecheta’s “The Joys of Motherhood” and Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀’s “Stay With Me”, exploring women’s rights, motherhood, sacrifice and how women’s lives are decided for them by family, spouses and children.

The film is produced by One Child Grace Studio in association with C.A.N.O Productions, Uncut Gem Productions and Nka Pictures, with Yinka Adegoke as cinematographer and Efosa Ogbomo as executive producer.
