The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigation into officers filmed allegedly extorting a dispatch rider.
The incident involving officers attached to the Makinde Divisional Headquarters was captured on a hidden camera by the rider and went viral on social media on Monday.
In the video, the officers were seen stopping the rider during a stop-and-search operation and demanding money. The rider, whose name was not disclosed, claimed he was forced to pay ₦20,000.
The Command confirmed it is aware of the video. In a statement on Monday, it said, “The Lagos State Police Command is aware of the video and has commenced an investigation into the incident.”
The Command identified the officers involved as personnel attached to Makinde Division and said they have reported to the Command Headquarters in Ikeja for questioning.
“In line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, psc, mnips, the officers involved have reported at the Command Headquarters and are currently being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation,” the statement read.
It added, “The Command assures the public that the investigation is ongoing and appropriate action will be taken based on its findings.”
The Command did not confirm whether the officers have been arrested or disciplined as of Monday, and did not independently confirm the ₦20,000 amount alleged by the rider.
The incident comes weeks after another Lagos resident, Nasir Ahmed, accused three policemen of extorting him after stopping his vehicle on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.
