Kebbi: Lakurawa terrorists attack kills two soldiers, Chinese national

Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have killed two soldiers and a Chinese national in Kebbi State. The attack occurred on Thursday at a construction site in Maiyama Local Government Area of the state.

Police say the gunmen infiltrated Kebbi from neighbouring Sokoto State through Kebbe Local Government Area and attacked workers handling the Illela-Badagry Super Highway project.

The spokesperson of the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the incident.

Usman said the soldiers were providing security for the Chinese expatriate and other workers when the attackers launched a surprise assault.

“Yes, the attack occurred, but the terrorists are not from Kebbi State. They infiltrated the state through a village bordering Kebbi State,” Usman said.

He said the two soldiers and the Chinese national were killed while several others sustained injuries.

He declined to release the identities of the deceased soldiers, saying they were military personnel, not police officers.

“We cannot give you the names of those killed in the attack because they are not police officers,” he said.

Usman described the attack as barbaric and unwarranted, adding that joint security agencies have launched a manhunt for the attackers.

The Lakurawa group, a new armed group operating in parts of north-west Nigeria along the border with Niger Republic, has been linked to previous attacks in Kebbi and Sokoto states.
