Harry Kane says his 73-goal haul last season “speaks for itself” as the race for the Ballon d’Or heats up.
The Bayern Munich and England striker is among the favourites for the award in October, alongside Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal, after a scoring season only ever bettered by Lionel Messi.
“I’ve never liked to talk about myself too much,” Kane told Marca. “The only thing I would say is that last season was incredible, on a personal level and as a team. It was, by far, the best season of my life.
“It’s true that to finish on 73 goals, the second-highest tally in history, speaks for itself. I’m extremely proud of that. I can only thank my teammates and everyone who has helped me to make that possible.
“But the Ballon d’Or is not in my hands. It depends on the people that vote. From my point of view, last season is in the past. I’m now focused on this one and I’m eager to see what else I can achieve.
“I know that people are going to speak a lot about the Ballon d’Or until October, because it’s a big award.”
The 33-year-old, who noted it could be a good omen that this year’s ceremony will be held in London, is also one Golden Shoe away from making history.
If he finishes this season as Europe’s top scorer for a third time, he will join Messi with six and Cristiano Ronaldo with four as the only players to have won the award more than twice.
“Messi and Ronaldo dominated football for a whole generation. They are two of the best in history,” Kane said.
“To be part of that conversation is already special. It’s a goal.
“Being a striker, I’m expected to score goals. The Golden Boot is not my only goal but, of course, I know that, if I win it, I’ll also be helping the team. So all of that just motivates me.
“Every time I win one, I want another, then another, and this time will be no different. I hope to be there again this season, scoring as many goals as I can in the Bundesliga, and we will see if I can get another.”
