Rabat – Ghana has shut down Polisario’s claims and allegations, renewing its firm decision on the withdrawal of its recognition of Polisario’s self-styled “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (SADR).
In a statement today from Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, the country also reaffirmed its unwavering position in support of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as a serious and credible political solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
Ghana’s position, which the ministry reiterated in a post on its official social media, came hours after Polisario alleged that Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa received credentials from a Polisario envoy.
In response, Ghana emphasized that its decision to withdraw its recognition of Polisario’s self-styled SADR on January 6 last year remains in effect.
Ghana also reiterated its position in support of the UN-led political process, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2797 of October 2025, which recognized the Autonomy Plan as a genuine political solution to the dispute.
It also supports the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy Staffan de Mistura in facilitating and conducting negotiations on the basis of Morocco’s Autonomy proposal.
Ghana’s statement comes as Morocco continues to strength its position on the Sahara dossier.
As recently as this month, a group of 40 countries reaffirmed support for Morocco’s full sovereignty over its southern provinces and backed the autonomy framework under Moroccan sovereignty.
More than 130 countries now support the Autonomy Plan.
Ghana’s position also deepens the isolation Polisario and its supporter, Algeria’s regime, have been facing for their clinginess to outdated narratives on the Sahara dispute. Algeria’s regime, which shelters, arms, finances, and supports Polisario’s separatism, continues to reject its role as a main political party to the Sahara dispute – posing itself merely as an observer.
Resolution 2797, however, has been firm in urging Algeria’s regime to engage in roundtable negotiations as part of a UN-led political process, seeking to find a political solution to the dispute based on Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only or the most feasible political solution able to put an end to the 50-long-standing conflict.
