Everton’s US owners consider sale of club two years after takeover

Everton’s American owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG), are considering selling a controlling stake in the club less than two years after taking over.

The Premier League club announced on Friday that TFG is exploring new investment options, including the potential sale of a controlling interest.

TFG completed the takeover from former owner Farhad Moshiri in December 2024, paying a reported £400 million for his 94.1% stake when the club was facing financial uncertainty and points deductions.

In a statement, the owners said, “When TFG became custodians of Everton, the club faced significant financial uncertainty and challenges both on and off the pitch.”

“The immediate priority was to provide the stability, investment and support needed to secure the club’s future, including helping to bring the long-promised stadium to completion for its deserving supporters.”

“With that foundation now safely in place, the time is right to consider the next chapter for Everton.”

The group said it will only entertain offers from parties who will be “right stewards” to build on the progress, and that it will continue to support the club on and off the pitch during the process.

Since the takeover, TFG has overseen Everton’s move from Goodison Park to the new 53,000 capacity Hill Dickinson Stadium and worked to restructure debt.

The move comes after criticism of the club’s summer transfer window, where Everton recorded a net profit despite generating significant income from player sales.

TFG, which also owns AS Roma and AS Cannes, has appointed investment bank Moelis & Company to advise on the sale and said no further comment will be made.
