A police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, was crushed to death by a car during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos State. The incident happened along Olugbede Street on September 26, 2026.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed this during a press conference on Monday.
According to Tijani, officers on duty flagged down a Lexus ES 350 with registration number FKJ 223 KX driven by Olusola Olumide, a 21 year old phone seller, and asked him to pull over.
He said the driver initially stopped but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side.
“The sergeant was knocked down and his body was dragged under the moving vehicle,” Tijani said.
He said the driver refused to stop despite efforts by other officers and passersby to halt the vehicle.
“The driver was eventually chased and arrested. The officer sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries,” the commissioner said.
“He was taken to the nearby hospital and subsequently referred to LASUTH, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.”
Tijani said his remains have been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle has been recovered to the station.
He added that the trend of drivers speeding off when asked to pull over during stop and search operations has become worrisome.
However, Olumide denied deliberately hitting the officer, blaming brake failure.
“My car brake failed and I accidentally ran over the officer. I was about to park, but there was a slip and I hit the car in front of me. I couldn’t stop the car,” he said.
He claimed he had taken the car to a mechanic a day before the incident to change the brake pad and was heading to buy fuel when he encountered the officers. Police said investigation is ongoing.
