Troops of the Nigerian Army have repelled a massive attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a military base in Kukawa, Borno State, killing over 25 fighters.
Security sources said the attack happened late Tuesday night when a large number of terrorists launched a coordinated assault on troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion from four different directions.
The soldiers, supported by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, engaged the terrorists in a prolonged gun battle that lasted from about 9:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
More than 25 terrorists were neutralised, while 14 bodies and a cache of weapons, including six AK-47 rifles, were recovered from the battlefield. Some soldiers were also killed and others injured during the fierce exchange.
Military sources said the terrorists were forced to withdraw towards the Cross Kauwa axis on motorcycles. Air surveillance tracked the fleeing fighters and conducted precision strikes on those hiding under trees, killing about 10 more, with another strike eliminating 15 near the Tunbuns/Kangarwa axis.
Following the repulsion, the Brigade Commander moved to the area to coordinate reinforcement, replenishment of equipment, and further exploitation of the battlefield.
The operation underscores ongoing efforts by troops to prevent terrorist groups from gaining ground in the Kukawa and Lake Chad region.
