US singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month suspended jail sentence in the UK for attacking a producer with a bottle in a London nightclub.
Brown, 37, was sentenced on Monday at Southwark Crown Court to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months. That means he will only serve the time if he commits another offence within the next year.
The case relates to an incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair on February 19, 2023.
The court heard that Brown struck music producer Abraham Diaw twice on the head with a tequila bottle. Prosecutors described it as a vicious and unprovoked attack that lasted about 20 seconds in a crowded club.
Brown had pleaded guilty to affray in July.
In return, more serious charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon were dropped.
His co-defendant and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month suspended sentence.
Judge Tony Baumgartner said the use of a bottle made the attack dangerous.
He told Brown: “Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone.”
Brown was arrested in May this year when he returned to the UK for his Breezy Bowl tour. He was initially denied bail before being released after agreeing to pay a £5 million security fee.
Outside the court, fans cheered as Brown left the dock and thanked the judge before walking free.
