FIFA has named the United States as the host nation for the first-ever Women’s Club World Cup.
The announcement was made on Thursday, confirming that the long-awaited tournament will now hold in January 2028.
The competition will run for almost a month, from January 5th to 30th, bringing together 19 of the best women’s clubs in the world. It will become a quadrennial tournament, holding every four years.
Explaining its decision, FIFA said the US was the standout choice. The body cited America’s experience in organising top tournaments, its top-class stadiums and facilities, and the massive interest women’s football enjoys there.
This will not be the first time the US is hosting a big FIFA event. The country staged the new-look men’s Club World Cup in 2025 and co-hosted the men’s World Cup with Mexico and Canada earlier this year in 2026.
For the maiden women’s edition, Europe will have the highest number of clubs. UEFA gets six slots, while Africa, Asia, North and Central America, and South America will produce three clubs each. Oceania will have one representative.
FIFA has also confirmed seven clubs that have already qualified. They include European giants Arsenal and Barcelona, American side Gotham FC, Mexico’s Club America Femenil, Brazil’s Corinthians, China’s Wuhan Jiangda and North Korea’s Naegohyang.
According to FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer Sarai Bareman, more than a dozen more clubs will join them to make history in the United States.
The tournament was earlier planned for 2026. However, FIFA shifted it to 2028 to avoid clashing with the Women’s World Cup in 2027 and the Los Angeles Olympics later in 2028.
