Residents have rescued a day-old baby boy abandoned in an uncompleted building at a mining site in Plateau State.
The baby was found on Sunday at a site along Ardo Lane in Naraguta community, Jos North Local Government Area, with his umbilical cord still attached.
Sources told PUNCH Metro that the baby was discovered after children playing near the uncompleted building heard his cries and alerted residents.
The children informed the family of Lukman Yusuf Wayas, who immediately contacted security operatives.
Wayas said he had first heard a baby crying around 11pm on Saturday but thought it was from a newborn in a nearby house.
“When the children heard the cry again this morning, they alerted us, and we immediately informed security operatives, who took the baby to the hospital for medical attention,” he said.
He added that he later returned to the scene with a health worker and found remains of the placenta, suggesting the baby was delivered at the location.
The security team took the newborn to a hospital where he is receiving medical care.
Community leaders have reacted to the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
Chairman of the Elders’ Association for Angwan Rogo, Rimi, Zinaria and Sabon Layi, Alhaji Yusuf Wayas, described the incident as serious and urged parents to pay more attention to their families and protect vulnerable people.
The Ardo of Yanjin, Aliko Sa’adu, said similar cases had occurred in the community before and called on authorities to identify the mother and establish what happened.
