The United States government has advised its citizens to reconsider travelling to Kenya over health risks linked to the spread of Ebola.
The US State Department raised its travel advisory for Kenya from Level 2 to Level 3 on Monday, October 19.
According to the advisory issued by the US Embassy in Kenya, the upgrade was due to increased health risks in the East African country.
“Reconsider travel to Kenya due to risk of health, crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest, and traffic safety. Some areas have increased risk,” the advisory stated.
“The level was changed from Level 2 to Level 3 due to health risks,” it added.
The warning comes as Kenya confirmed an additional case of Ebola on Sunday, bringing total infections in the country to eight.
Kenya has been on heightened alert following a major outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo which has crossed borders in the region. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain.
The US advisory also noted that medical services in Kenya are limited, especially in rural areas, and facilities often lack sufficient drugs and equipment.
The World Health Organisation said last week that there was no evidence of community transmission in Kenya yet, as contacts of confirmed cases remain under daily monitoring.
