The Portuguese Football Association has suspended Cristiano Ronaldo for 30 days after he left the national team camp without permission.
In a ruling released on Monday, the Federation’s disciplinary council said it found the 41-year-old forward guilty and upheld the charge in full. Ronaldo will also pay a fine of 255 euros.
The incident happened earlier this month when the striker left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen before the Nations League match against Denmark.
It came after a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team. Ronaldo was an unused substitute against Norway and later accused the coach of twice breaking his promise on his playing time, a claim Jesus denied.
According to the disciplinary body, Ronaldo breached Article 160(1) of the Federation’s regulations which punishes players who leave national team activities without justification. Proceedings in the matter began on October 9. The statement did not clarify which games the ban will cover.
Ronaldo has since apologised for failing to greet supporters after the Norway game and for abandoning his teammates, saying he is still available to play for Portugal after serving the punishment.
FA President Pedro Proenca said the Federation wants the former captain back in the squad once the issue is resolved.
