The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said 56,000 candidates registered for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, Second Series.
The Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Mr Suleiman Kum, disclosed this on Saturday during an inspection of the ongoing Computer-Based Test (CBT) for English Language at the council’s Training and Testing Centre, Ijaiye Road, Ogba, Lagos.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Kum said the figure includes about 272 walk-in candidates who registered to remedy deficiencies in specific subjects after the main registration window.
He said Lagos State alone accounted for over 22,000 candidates, including about 50 walk-in candidates.
Kum said the introduction of CBT has helped to drastically reduce examination malpractice and improve the credibility and transparency of WAEC examinations.
“We have discovered that computer-based tests, popularly known as CBT, are truly the best way to conduct examinations because malpractice is drastically reduced,” he said.
He noted that WAEC introduced CBT for private candidates in 2024 and has continued to improve the system to strengthen examination security.
He added that candidates are thoroughly searched before entering examination halls to prevent unauthorised materials, stressing that the measure is not to trap candidates but to safeguard the integrity of the examination.
Kum said WAEC will continue to innovate to remain the benchmark for examination integrity in the country.
