Gunmen have killed one trader and left seven others injured in a fresh ambush in Plateau State, in yet another attack targeting commuters and business travellers in the state.
The incident occurred when the traders were travelling along a route frequently used by businessmen and other road users. According to survivors, the attackers had laid ambush along the roadside before opening fire on their vehicle.
One of the survivors, Abdul-Alin Ibrahim, who recounted the incident in an interview with Trust TV, said the gunmen operated on motorcycles and were heavily armed.
“We were travelling when we suddenly saw men on motorcycles, three on each bike, carrying guns. They overtook us. At first, we were afraid. But when we saw other vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, we felt relieved and continued the journey. Moments later, we saw gunmen ahead with sophisticated weapons. They stopped our vehicle and began shooting. When they killed my friends, the driver quickly sped off. That was how the two of us survived,” Ibrahim said.
His account highlights the growing daring of armed groups operating along highways and rural roads in Plateau State, where traders and travellers have become frequent targets of ambushes and kidnappings.
The injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the body of the deceased trader was recovered and buried amid tight security to prevent further tension.
As of Sunday evening, the identities of the victims had not been officially released and the Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue a formal statement on the attack.
