A police inspector has died after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver while on route-lining duty ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s return to Lagos.
The deceased officer has been identified as Inspector Mercy Bassey, attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station.
The incident happened at about 2.30pm on Tuesday at the Adekunle Intersection on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Lagos Island. Bassey was crossing the bridge while deployed as part of security arrangements for the presidential movement when she was hit.
A security source who pleaded anonymity said a black Toyota Highlander SUV hit the officer and sped off immediately after the collision. The registration number of the vehicle and the identity of the driver were not known as at press time.
According to the source, patrolmen on duty chased the SUV but the driver escaped to an unknown destination.
Bassey was rushed to the General Hospital, Ebute Metta for emergency treatment but died while awaiting treatment. Her remains are to be moved to a morgue in Yaba for preservation.
Police authorities have commenced efforts to obtain CCTV footage from the area to identify the vehicle and track down the driver.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the incident but declined to give further details.
President Tinubu returned to Lagos on Tuesday after a working vacation in the United Kingdom and France. His aircraft landed at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja at about 6.22pm.
