Tragedy struck at Ogunlana Junction, inward Ojuelegba, Surulere, Lagos, after a passenger died following a lone accident involving a commercial bus.
The incident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LND 130 XR, which rammed into a median pole around the Fallout area of Surulere.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of the bus was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and was driving recklessly before the crash. Motorists approaching from behind were said to have taken caution to avoid colliding with the erratically driven vehicle.
In the ensuing panic, a male passenger who attempted to escape from the uncontrolled vehicle jumped out of the moving bus and sustained grievous injuries after hitting the ground.
He later died from the injuries sustained.
LASTMA officials conducting routine surveillance along the Ojuelegba axis swiftly mobilized to the scene. They secured the accident spot, managed traffic and removed the damaged vehicle and the deceased from the road to prevent a secondary crash.
Officers from Area C Police Division, Ojuelegba, provided security at the scene, while officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency evacuated the remains.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving, reckless driving and operating mechanically defective vehicles.
