The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a married woman and two staff members of a guest house in Gwarimpa over the body of a man found under the Katampe Bridge along the Kubwa Expressway.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed this on Saturday while briefing journalists at the Command headquarters in Abuja.
He said the body was discovered on August 26 after the man had been reported missing by his family. The discovery had initially triggered speculations that the deceased was a victim of kidnapping or “one chance” robbery.
According to Sanusi, investigations later established that the corpse was that of the missing man. A major lead came from the deceased’s missing mobile phone. Although the device had been switched off, operatives traced his last known communication to Mrs Rukayat Muhammed of Garki Area 2.
Further investigation revealed that Muhammed, who is married, was allegedly in a romantic relationship with the deceased and had saved his contact on her phone as “Safiyat”.
Police said both of them had lodged at Good Samaritan Guest House, Second Avenue, Gwarimpa. Muhammed allegedly discovered that the man was no longer breathing and instead of reporting to the management or the police, she took his mobile phone and left the facility.
The CP said the hotel management later tried to reach the occupants after several hours without response and eventually accessed the room where the body was found.
Instead of alerting the authorities, two hotel workers, Ibrahim Omeiza and Kefat Bitrus, allegedly removed the body from the room and dumped it under the Katampe Bridge in an attempt to cover up the incident.
Sanusi said the three suspects are in custody while an autopsy is expected to determine the actual cause of death as investigations continue.
