Florence Ajimobi, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria, has been appointed as the country’s Governor on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2026–2028 term.
Her appointment comes after Nigeria was elected to the IAEA Board during the 70th Regular Session of the agency’s General Conference held in Vienna, Austria.
Ajimobi, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the IAEA and other international organisations in Vienna, will represent the Federal Government on the Board and its various committees.
In her new role, she will take part in deliberations on IAEA programmes, nuclear safety and security, safeguards, peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, as well as international cooperation.
She is also expected to present Nigeria’s positions at board meetings and contribute to shaping the agency’s policy direction and activities.
According to the statement, Nigeria’s election to the Board and Ajimobi’s appointment will boost the country’s engagement with the IAEA and reaffirm its commitment to the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology for sustainable development.
The appointment will also give Nigeria a stronger platform to deepen global cooperation in key sectors where nuclear technology can drive national growth, including healthcare, agriculture, food security, water resource management and human capacity development.
As Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Austria, Ajimobi is expected to leverage the role to advance national interests and amplify Nigeria’s voice in the global nuclear governance system.
