At least 27 people have been killed in two separate mass shootings in South Africa’s two biggest cities, police have confirmed.
Police said on Sunday that the first attack happened around 7:30pm GMT on Saturday, when eight gunmen armed with assault rifles stormed a bar west of Johannesburg.
According to the police, the attackers opened fire on customers drinking outside before entering the bar to continue shooting. The incident left 17 people dead and 15 others injured.
The victims include 13 men and four women.
Police said the suspects set two vehicles ablaze before fleeing the scene. The motive for the attack is yet to be established and no arrest has been made.
In a separate incident early Sunday, gunmen attacked an entertainment venue in a township outside Cape Town, killing 10 people and injuring 11 others.
Five of the victims were confirmed dead at the scene, while the others died on their way to the hospital.
No suspect has been arrested in connection with the two attacks.
The shootings are the latest in a wave of gun violence in South Africa, a country battling high crime rates linked to gang rivalries and illegal firearms. The country, with a population of about 62 million, records an average of 60 murders daily.
