Immigration Officer Killed, Another Injured By Gunmen In Niger

The Nigeria Immigration Service has confirmed an attack on its personnel in Niger State that left one officer dead and another seriously wounded.

The Service said the attack happened on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, around 11:30 a.m., while two officers from the Wawa Control Post were on routine surveillance patrol along the Tunga Taya–Woro axis.

In a statement on Thursday, the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, gave the names of the officers involved as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I, I.U. Babangida, who died in the attack, and Inspector A.K. Musa, who sustained injuries.

Musa was able to escape from the scene despite serious injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.

According to the NIS, the late officer has been buried according to Islamic rites. The Service described his death as a painful loss and honoured his dedication and commitment to national service.

The Service commiserated with the family, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased, and wished the injured officer quick recovery. It assured both families of continued institutional support.

It added that it is collaborating with the Niger State Government and other security agencies to track down the gunmen behind what it described as a heinous act, with a view to bringing them to justice.

The NIS stressed that despite the incident, it remains committed to border security and the protection of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
