Lecturers in three Lagos State-owned universities are set to return to the classrooms after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, suspended its strike.
The affected institutions are Lagos State University, LASU, Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology, LASUSTECH.
ASUU announced the suspension on Friday in a joint statement signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator, Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH.
The union said the decision followed negotiations with the Lagos State Government over improved staff welfare and implementation of outstanding agreements.
It directed its members to resume academic activities with immediate effect.
“Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organisations,” the statement said.
ASUU thanked students and parents for their patience, and appreciated the media, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and pro-labour organisations including the Joint Action Front, JAF, Education Rights Concern, ERC, and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights, CDWR, for their support.
The union noted that engagement with the government will continue to ensure full resolution of all outstanding welfare issues.
